CLT School Nagymaros

The School of the future is built from wood A new primary school in Hungary is being built with CLT (cross-laminated timber), showcasing sustainable design and offering a healthy, inspiring space for students.

The Building

The single-story building covers 1,026 m² gross floor area (762 m² net) and will initially house four classrooms, with the possibility of expanding to eight in the future. Designed to provide a healthy environment for lower-grade students, the school promotes not only academic growth but also the physical and emotional well-being of children.

Collaboration

This innovative project is the result of close and active collaboration: architectural plans were created by Bánáti + Hartvig Architects, and construction is carried out by Hello Wood. The building will become home to the Budapest School’s new micro-campus, BPS Dunakanyar.

Why CLT?

CLT is not only a sustainable building material—it has proven positive effects on human health and cognitive performance: – Improves focus and concentration by up to 8–25% – Reduces cortisol (stress hormone) levels by 12% – Supports cognitive recovery by 27% – Creates a calm, emotionally secure atmosphere

Environmentally Responsible Technology

The school is constructed using three primary materials: wood, polycarbonate, and steel. CLT elements are manufactured in prefabricated, precision-cut forms, resulting in minimal construction waste. When dismantled, many parts can even be composted. Polycarbonate is recyclable and adaptable, while steel is used selectively where structural demands exceed wood’s capacity. The building rests on ground screws rather than a traditional concrete foundation, significantly reducing the need for concrete and lowering the project’s overall ecological footprint.
