Benedetta Tagliabue – presentation

Internationally recognised architect at Design Week – invited by Hello Wood

Invited by Hello Wood, Benedetta Tagliabue, Barcelona based internationally recognised architect gave a presentation during the Budapest Design Week 2014, at MOME University of Art and Design.

Benedetta talked about the relationship between theory and practice, the activities of the office and the closely related Miralles Foundation, the achievements and the challenges held by future, and about how a woman can succeed in the world of architecture.

Royal Institute of British Architects’ Jencks Award

“Tough, warm, surprising, complex and open-ended architecture that is very much like the city from where it springs, Barcelona.” – world famous architect Charles Jencks stated, when he gave the Royal Institute of British Architects’ annual Jencks award to Benedetta Tagliabue. This prestigious award was previously given to Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhas among others. Benedetta Tagliabue is one of the best known contemporary architects. Her buildings include the New Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, the Diagonal Mar Park, the Santa Caterina market in Barcelona, and the Spanish Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo which was awarded the prestigious RIBA International “Best International Building of 2011” award. In 2014 Tagliabue’s office, Miralles-Tagliabue EMBT was present at Hello Wood’s architecture camp: Salvador Gilabert Sanz, one of the leading architects of EMBT mentored a group of Hungarian and international students for a week.

Benedetta Tagliabue – Biography

Benedetta Tagliabue studied architecture at Istituto di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV) and currently acts as director of the international architecture firm Miralles Tagliabue EMBT, founded in 1994 in collaboration with Enric Miralles, based in Barcelona and since 2010, in Shanghai. Tagliabue works mainly in Europe, China and Taiwan. Her studio works in the fields of architecture, design of public spaces with special attention and care toward the environment, rehabilitation, interior and industrial design. The specialities of EMBT are attentive to context and urbanism, the crossing of borders between design and architecture and the maintaining of harmony among buildings and public spaces.

To achieve the desired solution, EMBT believes that the design process must be a collaborative effort between the client and the designer. Tagliabue and the studio put great emphasis on each individual projects’ context, history and culture and aims to enhance these aspects through their design process, following the principles of sustainability and green architecture. Tagliabue’s studio projects include The Business School of Fudan University in Shanghai, office towers in Taiwan and Taichung and Social Housing in Madrid. She is also very active on the teaching field, she has been a visiting professor at Harvard University and Columbia University, and has won international awards for her poetic architecture in the fields of public space and design.
