Építész Mustra – The Hungarian Gathering 2018

Hungarian Summer School & Festival for Architecture

During the summer Hello Wood organizes interdisciplinary art camp which focuses especially on the networking, introduction and competition of Hungarian universities.

Bringing in all universities from Hungary

Altogether 100 students from the country’s 10 architect courses with their own renowned, award-winning professors can participate. The summer program’s aim is to construct well-prepared, thoroughly designed installations made of sustainable materials which will be in long-lasting harmony with the environment. Our goal is to ensure that young people and their leaders engage themselves with the local characteristics and nurturing age-long traditions. By addressing to the local institutions of architecture, we created a community event in which we can discuss current educational issues and challenges hand-in-hand by creating together.

Építész Mustra 2018 – Second Act

In 2017, Hello Wood, after 4 years in Csopak, organized its first architecture festival called Építész Mustra in the Tokaj wine region. Thanks to the cooperation with the region’s Development Council, the creative festival was also held there in 2018. In the program organized with the participation of 10 domestic educational institutions, the participating universities built wooden installations in 8 settlements of the region – Bekecs, Bodrogkeresztúr, Bodrogkisfalud, Golop, Rátka, Szegi, Szerencs and Tarcal – over the course of a week. The undisclosed goal of the educational program series was to expand the world of ideas for the renewal of the region with the fresh ideas.

Educational platform – learning by building

By integrating the Hello Wood program into the university curriculum, students were able to create thoroughly researched, functional installations tailored perfectly to their sites. The program fosters inter-university collaboration, challenging young designers to execute full-scale projects in real-world environments. Having developed their plans during the spring semester, teams arrived on-site ready to assemble their work. This initiative bridges the gap between theory and practice: with Hello Wood’s professional mentorship, students follow their ideas from initial concept to final construction.

Why Mustra?

The competition also features high stakes: in 2017, the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) won the 1-million-HUF grand prize, as voted by the participants. Their project in Monok, titled Merengő (The Meditator), created a sacred space around a tree at the foot of Calvary Hill, offering a unique view of the village while inviting quiet reflection between the cemetery and the Calvary Church.
The Special Prize of the Tokaj Wine Region Development Council was awarded to the Tállyoló project by the Szent István University’s Faculty of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning. Led by Csaba Valkai and Fruzsina Zelenák, the installation marks Tállya as the geometric center of Europe, while playfully acknowledging other European towns that claim the same title.
Finally, the Hello Wood Special Prize went to Széchenyi István University. Led by András Cseh, József Élő, and Ádám Tátrai, the team replaced a dilapidated wire fence between the Mailloth Mansion park and a schoolyard with Kerekítés (Rounding)—a mobile, interactive installation that doubles as playground equipment.
