Pilot Year 2010

How it all began?

MOME line – design works organized the first Hungarian Wood Festival in 2010 with the aim of creating a tradition. Péter Pozsár architect, founder of Újirány group and lecturer at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design took notice of a Danish event as early as in 2009. At the workshop in Copenhagen teams selected via competition, were asked to realise their designs made from 1 kilometre of wood planks.

The following year architect students of MOME were also selected by the jury. However Wood Works, the organiser of the Danish Woodfestival in 2010 announced that the event would be canceled due to financial problems. At this point the enthusiastic Péter asked Maxim Bakos, the manager of MOME line – design works to join him and the two decided that the Hungarian Wood Festival still will be held.

The first Hungarian Wood Festival

The first Hungarian Wood festival was held in 2010 with four teams composed of young and creative students designing and making complex installations or sculptures that can be folded or dissembled, made of a kilometre of wood planks. The working hours were spent in such a good atmosphere that not only the four required installations were finished but there was enough enthusiasm to experiment with some more structures.

The week-long creative student workshop’s aim was using wood in a versatile and creative way. During the week-long creative workshop 20 students, led by 4 team leaders participated from various fields of architecture and product design area. Similar to the rules of the Danish Woodfestival held in 2009, each team designed and created its own sculpture or installation using 1 kilometre of 4×4 cm pinewood planks.

To make it a more difficult, a new challenge was added to the conditions by the organisers: the resulting works had to be foldable and/or disassemble by the junctions. Besides being a design challenge, it was also important that the installations were transportable to be exhibited at the Design Week Budapest 2010.
