What is Hello Wood Festival - Builder Summit?

How it started

Hello Wood started as an art camp in 2010 for students in architecture and design and has grown into a unique art camp & festival involving more than 20 universities and 30 countries, seeking sustainable and replicable models for achieving social benefits through architecture and design. Our goal is to promote the construction process as a platform for discussion, innovation and exchanging knowledge.

Builder Summit 2023

After a 3-year hiatus, Hello Wood's education programme is back as Builder Summit - bigger, better and more exciting than ever. In 2023 we will not only create wood installation but also land art projects. For the first time in Hello Wood's history, we welcome AR and metaverse projects to the festival. And if it's not enought: we will also bring the coolest crater party of the summer to the post-apocalyptic mine of Zalahaláp.

Venue

This year's Hello Wood international summer school & festival will be held in an abandoned, post-apocalyptic quarry, in Zalahaláp, Hungary. The basalt mine has a 360-degree look of Lake Balaton, neighboring hills, and nature. We invite projects to recultivate the mine, to make it a special destination for visitors. The terrain has small mounds, flat surfaces, and basalt stones for use. Projects must reflect on this year's Builder Summit topic: construction and demolition. Builder Summit will host a 2-day long music festival, so any project that provides function during the summer's coolest crater party is welcome.

Deadline for participants: 11th of June!

European Capital of Culture - Veszprém - Balaton 2023

The 2023 Hello Wood Festival is organized within the framework of the European Capital of Culture program that will be held this summer in the Veszprém-Balaton region, Hungary. The program brings many cultural programs and projects to the region with which Hello Wood has always been closely connected. The region is well-known by Hello Wood and its visitors, our team has visited Csóromfölde many-many times with our summer school and made it an internationally important destination among architecture and design students and teachers. Hello Wood is super excited to contribute to this regional collaboration between cities, towns, organizations, and people.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I get to the site, what is the easiest solution?
The easiest way to get to the venue is by coming to Budapest. From Budapest, we will arrange your transport to the site of the event (Zalahaláp) on July 6th. But every participant is responsible for getting to Budapest on their own (or with your friends, that is totally up to you).

What about the accommodation for the participants?
For the participants, the accommodation will be camping. So if you are well prepared, you should bring your usual camping equipment. If you are less likely to know what comes and goes with camping, let us know, so we can help you with great advice.

Can I apply if I am not a student anymore?
We happily welcome everyone on board, but we have an age limit, which means you must be over 18 years old. We want to gather dedicated young architects, artists, and designers from all over the world, but if you have been working in the profession for several years and want to stay inspired, you are welcome too, there is no limit to being curious.

Can I apply if I am not in the field of architecture?
Yes, you can. The Builder Summit is open to anyone who wants to try themself out in the building and creating. Participants are asked to submit a portfolio of their previous works. It can be architecture, DIY, or design-related projects, whether completed or planned, and everyone is welcome to apply.

What is the application procedure?
Well, you submit your portfolio, and after the given submission period is over, you have to wait 1 or 2 weeks, until the Hello Wood team is reaching out to you with the news (preferably with the good one, that you have been selected to participate). After that, we will give you every detail that you need.

How many people do I have to bring with me to get a discount?
You need to bring 10 people with you to get a 20% discount.
When everyone submits their application, they need to type in the group organizer’s name in the relevant section, that is how we can see that the given people are representing a group.

How can I pay the fee?
After you submit your application, you will shortly (within a week or two) get an email from the Hello Wood team, which will contain the link to the site where you can buy your ticket online.

How long can I buy my ticket?
You can buy your ticket until the next submission period starts. After that, you have to contact the Hello Wood team, because you will no longer have the excess to buy a ticket at the price of the previous period, but if you have an issue with it, they can help you.

Can I get a discount on the participation fee?
You can get a discount if you are eligible for a social scholarship or if your portfolio is mesmerizing enough you can become a volunteer, but you need to do extra work during the event in that case.
Another way to get a discount is by bringing a group of friends with you.

How can I get a social scholarship?
The social scholarship is for those who are still in school and those who have some financial difficulties. When you submit your application you can apply for a scholarship but we recommend you write down in your motivational letter why you think you are eligible for it.

How can I apply to be a volunteer?
To become a volunteer you need to click on the volunteer option in the registration form and submit an amazing, mesmerizing portfolio. Once the jury has decided that you deserve to be a volunteer, you will get a 30% discount on the ticket price, but you will also have to do extra work during the event.

What does it mean that I have to do extra work if I apply to be a volunteer?
This will roughly mean keeping the communal areas tidy, tidying and putting away tools, pre-packing lunch if help is needed, etc.
