Half of a House

Half of a House explores the creative repurposing of rammed earth formwork to aid in more circular economies of construction/production. The wooden formwork, used to cast precisely half of the house, is explicitly designed so that it can be easily reused to finish constructing the other half of the house.
In this sense, the project dialogues with the festival theme by directly exploring how demolished formwork can be reused in construction. Contrary to typical construction practices, in this case, the demolished formwork travelled only two meters, where it was immediately reused — simultaneously reducing the amount of material needed to construct a house and eliminating all waste. The house was constructed using traditional rammed earth methods made with soils sourced from the surrounding environment, using local basalt as an aggregate.
