The Torii is a study of an architectural typology known for over a thousand years in the Eastern world, signifying the transition from one state into another. In Japanese Shinto tradition, the Torii gate delineates a boundary between the mundane and sacred states. This contemporary take on the traditional Torii gate aims to create a landmark threshold in the landscape, to spark awareness of and celebrate the boundary and unity of opposing entities: the sacred & mundane, natural & manmade, creation & destruction, permanence & impermanence.
